George Weston often draws similarities between art and chess, finding
himself trusting his creative intuition despite the temptation to
over-calculate. He is a patient painter, whose meticulous style has
grown from a life-time of experimentation and creative trial and
error.
Weston's work features softly blended shadows and fluid shapes that juxtapose
against hard edges and chess-like perspectival backdrops, generating geometric
and surreal compositions that speak to mental processes, logic, and the
calculated chaos they cause. Textural experimentation is complemented by
rigid structures and strict rules in Weston's oil paintings and watercolours,
resulting in precise yet playful artworks that walk the line between the
conscious and subconscious. In his oil paintings, fabric twists and warps
freely, yet is restricted by the tight grid-like structure that holds it
together. In other works, loose watercolour blooms are trapped within small
geometric forms, limiting the freedom of the medium to a strict set of boundaries.
Through his technical and slow approach to painting, he aims to create a
pensive, impactful, yet calming space that acts as a visualisation of abstracted
memories and trauma - Weston's intention is to inspire viewers to slow down,
take a breath, and deliberate over how their own setbacks and passions have
influenced their way of thinking, and how they themselves experience the
art of play.

I vividly remember the first time I painted with oils. As a fourteen
year old in art class, we were tasked with creating an artist-inspired
painting - of course I chose to study Salvador Dali, who remains my
greatest inspiration to this day. The sensuous and satisfying feeling
of blending harmonious and bold colours together hooked me, allowing a
reflective state of mind in which I could escape reality and create my
own.
In 2016, I left London, UK, to pursue a creative career in Vancouver, Canada.
Whilst studying Visual Arts at Emily Carr University of Art & Design (BFA
2021), I had the opportunity to experiment with a wide range of processes,
and built a diverse portfolio as seen in my
Past Work
.
Now working out of North Vancouver, I have since refined my meticulous style
to reflect my patient and careful way of being, and have amassed a series
of paintings that I can proudly present as a cohesive whole.
I truly find the same joy from painting whether I am the one holding
the brush or not. Helping aspiring artists to experience that same
feeling that I had at fourteen is an absolute honour and dream of
mine, and I am lucky to now be able to divide my time between my own
practice and teaching art.
I started teaching at John Lyon School, in the UK, where I held art classes
for 11-18 year olds and developed my love for sharing both my technical
knowledge as well as my creative passion. Following this, I was Managerial
Instructor at Peaceful Art Studio, in Richmond, Canada, guiding students
in building a portfolio to apply to universities; here, I thoroughly enjoyed
catering the education to each individual's passions and skills, and helped
every single student to successfully get their offers. Throughout this time,
I also ran painting workshops at several venues and events, including West
Point Grey Academy's Spring Art Camp.
Currently, I work at Parkgate Community Centre for North Vancouver Recreation
& Culture, where I hold classes that range from teaching 5 year olds watercolour
painting for the first time, to assisting 70 years to rediscover the love
for oil painting. I believe this is the ideal way to teach art: encouraging
artists to create for the sake of creating, without any pressure of school
exams or college applications, where they can effectively learn to overcome
the inevitable frustration and discouragement that can come with art-making.
Outside of work, I also offer
Paint Nights (one-off events)
as well as
Private Painting Lessons (several classes)
, where you can learn alongside me in the comfort of your own space. If
you are interested in picking up a brush and allowing yourself time to learn
Acrylics or Watercolour, please see the PDFs below and contact me!
A painting can create an everlasting memory, captured in real time. Whether you'd like to remember your special day with more than a photo, or have a fun performance that people can watch at your event, I offer live painting for any situation. I've had the honour of memorialising weddings, and have competed in and won live painting events such as Art Battle. Following the positive feedback from past requests, I would love to do more - if you would like to go home with a unique and personalised artwork to hang on your wall at home or office, please get in touch!
